Galveston has a rich history dating back to the 1500's. Galveston was named in the late 1700's for Bernardo de Galvez, a Spanish colonial govenor and general.
Galveston was devistated by a hurricane on 8 September 1900, killing over 6,000 people and destroying 1/3 of the island. To prevent major flooding by future hurricanes, a seawall was erected, which stands 17 feet tall and over 7 miles long.
Galveston is on the northeast coastline of Texas, ~60 miles southeast of Houston. It is a barrier island 32 miles long and 2 miles wide on the Gulf of Mexico with a population of ~60,000 residents.
